Does an urban environment affect leaf structure of Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae)? Acta Botanica
Bezerra,Laís de Almeida; Callado,Cátia Henriques; Cunha,Maura Da.
ABSTRACT External factors can interfere with the structure and biological activity of plants. Nevertheless, the susceptibility of plants to specific environmental conditions varies, which raises many questions about the behavior of medicinal plants when grown in urban areas. This study aims to detect possible changes induced by exposure of Eugenia uniflora L. to an urban environment, with emphasis on variation in external and internal leaf structure and differences in the production of its main metabolites. We compared leaves of E. uniflora cultivated in forest and urban sites and analyzed them for structural plasticity and characteristics indicative of stress in the urban environment. The leaves of the urban site revealed necrosis and reddish spots,...

Ecological significance of wood anatomy of Alseis pickelii Pilg. & Schmale (Rubiaceae) in a Tropical Dry Forest Acta Botanica
Campbell,Glaziele; Rabelo,Guilherme Rodrigues; Cunha,Maura Da.
This work describes, analyzes and compares the wood anatomy of Alseis pickelii from two distinct sites in Tropical Dry Forest. One site is an exploited forest that was disturbed by deforestation whereas the other site is preserved and has not been logged since selective logging in the 1960's. For the evaluation of wood anatomy, plant material was processed following standard techniques for light microscopy and histochemical tests. The results indicated that A. pickelii did not vary qualitatively between the two sites. The histochemical tests indicated the presence of prismatic crystals and starch in radial parenchyma of samples from both sites. Some quantitative parameters differed significantly between the two sites including: vessel frequency; vessel...

Histological analysis of pollen-pistil interactions in sour passion fruit plants (Passiflora edulis Sims) Biocell
Madureira,Hérika Chagas; Pereira,Telma Nair Santana; Cunha,Maura Da; Klein,Denise Espellet.
The success of sexual plant reproduction is directly influenced by specific interactions between the pollen and pistil. Light, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used to evaluate the steps of pollination in sour passion fruit plants (Passiflora edulis Sims). In the compatible interaction, pollen tubes grow through stigma projections towards the ovary. The pollen grain surface was found to be spheroidal and to consist of heteroreticulate exine with six colpi. Furthermore, analysis in vivo of pollen-pistil interactions indicated that stigmas of flowers 24 hours before anthesis are unable to discriminate compatible (genetically unrelated) and incompatible (genetically related) pollen grains. Taken together, these results provide...

Leaf anatomy and histochemistry of Macropeplus dentatus (Perkins) I. Santos & Peixoto and Macropeplus ligustrinus (Tul.) Perkins (Monimiaceae) Acta Botanica
Costa,Fernanda Flores; Lima,Helena Regina Pinto; Cunha,Maura Da; Santos,Inês da Silva.
The Monimiaceae is represented in the Neotropical region by six genera. Macropeplus Perkins is a Brazilian genus comprising four species restricted to high-montane Atlantic Forest areas, which have not been properly examined from the anatomical point of view. This study characterizes the anatomical structure and histochemical aspects of the leaves of Macropeplus dentatus and M. ligustrinus, and adds to our taxonomic knowledge ofthe genus. The individuals studied were collected in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park and in the Caraça Natural Park in southeastern Brazil. Among the characteristics common to the two species, hypostomatic leaves, dorsiventral structure, paracytic stomata, a subepidermal layer, collateral vascular system in the form of an arc in...

Outer cell wall structure and the secretion mechanism of colleters of Bathysa nicholsonii K. Schum. (Rubiaceae) Acta Botanica
Miguel,Emilio de Castro; Pireda,Saulo; Barros,Claudia Franca; Zottich,Umberto; Gomes,Valdirene Moreira; Miguens,Flavio Costa; Cunha,Maura Da.
ABSTRACT Secretory structures are formed by many types of plants and are present on numerous different organs. Among the many types of known secretory structures, colleters are predominant on plants of the Rubiaceae. One remarkable characteristic of secretory tissues is the export of exudates; however, the precise mechanism involved in this process is still unclear. To better understand the mechanisms of exudate externalization it is necessary to understand the ultrastructure and dynamics of the outer cell wall of the secretory structures during the secretory process, and so we investigated these aspects of the colleters of Bathysa nicholsonii. The outer cell wall (OCW) exhibits multiple layers: a basal polysaccharide rich layer; a cuticular membrane,...

Palynological characterization and genetic divergence between accessions of chilli and sweet peppers Horticultura Brasileira
Martins,Kellen C; Souza,Sérgio Alessandro M; Pereira,Telma Nair S; Rodrigues,Rosana; Pereira,Messias G; Cunha,Maura Da.
This study characterised pollen grains morphologically and studied the genetic divergence between accessions based on morphopollinic characters. Seven accessions, including domesticated, semi-domesticated and wild species of Capsicum (C. annuum var. annuum, C. chinense, C. baccatum var. pendulum, C. frutescens, Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum, C. baccatum var. baccatum and C. parvifolium), were cultivated in a greenhouse and their pollen grains collected and fixed during flowering. The pollen grains were acetolysed and described based on 13 pollinic characteristics (polar and equatorial axes, in an equatorial front view; ratio between polar axis and equatorial axis; equatorial axis in a polar view; thicknesses of the exine, sexine and nexine; apocolpus...

Papaya pulp gelling: is it premature ripening or problems of water accumulation in the apoplast? Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Oliveira,Jurandi Gonçalves de; Bressan-Smith,Ricardo Enrique; Campostrini,Eliemar; Cunha,Maura Da; Costa,Ernani Santos; Torres Netto,Alena; Coutinho,Kelly da Silva; SILVA,Marcelo Gomes da; Vitória,Angela Pierre.
Gelled aspect in papaya fruit is typically confused with premature ripening. This research reports the characterization of this physiological disorder in the pulp of papaya fruit by measuring electrolyte leakage, Pi content, lipid peroxidation, pulp firmness, mineral contents (Ca, Mg and K - in pulp and seed tissues), and histological analysis of pulp tissue. The results showed that the gelled aspect of the papaya fruit pulp is not associated with tissue premature ripening. Data indicate a reduction of the vacuole water intake as the principal cause of the loss of cellular turgor; while the waterlogged aspect of the tissue may be due to water accumulation in the apoplast.

Stipular colleters in Psychotria nuda (Cham. & Schltdl.) Wawra (Rubiaceae): micromorphology, anatomy and cristals microanalysis Acta Botanica
Miguel,Emílio de Castro; Moraes,Daniel Gomes de; Cunha,Maura Da.
Colleters are secretory structures, with a protective function, that occur in different organs and in many Angiospermae families. The aim of this work was to describe the anatomy and micromorphology of colleters present in Psychotria nuda (Cham. & Schltdl.) Wawra as well as analyze the structure and composition of crystals from the central axis of the structure under study. The material was collected at the Tinguá Biological Reserve and processed according to usual techniques for light and scanning electron microscopy. The colleters are of the lachrymiform type, with an elongated central axis, formed by fundamental parenchyma, sheathed by a palisade layer, responsible for the secretion. Raphid crystals were observed in the central axis of the...
